Maryam Monalisa Gharavi is an artist and poet whose work explores the interplay between aesthetic and political valences in the public domain. She is the founder of Oil Research Group (ORG), a one-woman collective investigating coterminous oil, data, and extractive economies; ORG was awarded a NYFA Anonymous Was a Woman Environmental Art Grant in 2023. Book publications include The Distancing Effect (BlazeVOX); Secret Catalan Poem (The Elephants); Alphabet of an Unknown City (Belladonna*); Dictionary of Night, co-authored with Mirene Arsanios (Ashkal Alwan); Oil News 1989-2020, co-authored with Sam Lavigne (Sonic Acts); and a translation of Waly Salomão’s Algaravias: Echo Chamber (Ugly Duckling Presse), nominated for a PEN Award for Poetry in Translation. Her book _Bio_zzz (Inventory Press) is the first of its kind to be written on a social media platform while bypassing “big tech” data storage sites. Exhibition and performance sites include Pioneer Works, Nottingham Contemporary, New Museum, Serpentine Cinema, Mosaic Rooms, Wysing Arts Centre, Art Dubai, Paço das Artes, Brooklyn Public Library, Recess, Delfina Foundation, Darat al Funun, among others. Her work has appeared in contemporary publications and journals including Art in America, Women and Performance, The White Review, Los Angeles Review of Books, Triple Canopy, and more. She is Editor Emeritus of The New Inquiry where she previously served as Editor-at-Large and wrote the open text South/South, cited as “one to watch” by Los Angeles Times. She completed a Ph.D. at Harvard University; an M.F.A. at Bard College; held a postdoctoral Fulbright Fellowship at Birzeit University; and has served as a visiting artist, guest studio critic, and professor at a dozen international institutions. She is a prompt engineer in the field of generative artificial intelligence and Faculty at School of Visual Arts and School for Poetic Computation. She lives and works in New York.
